Timing Chain Slack & Guide Wear Database: Jaguar Land Rover 5.0L AJ133 V8

The AJ133 is a fantastic engine marred by poor guide metallurgy. Ignoring the cold-start rattle leads to jumped timing and a bent-valve disaster.

Affected Models

Range Rover (L405) Range Rover Sport (L494) Jaguar XJ (X351) Jaguar XF (X250)

Failure Window

60,000 - 90,000 miles

*Critical inspection required before this range.

Technical Breakdown

The 5.0L Supercharged V8 is a robust engine internals-wise, but the timing architecture has a fatal flaw in early generations (2010-2015).

The “Marbles” Sound

If you hear a distinct clattering sound for the first 3 seconds after a cold start, your chains are loose. This is the only warning before the chain skips a tooth and the pistons hit the valves.

The Official Fix

Land Rover released a revised guide with a hardened steel strike plate where the tensioner contacts the guide. Replacing the chains is an 18-24 hour labor job and requires specialized cam locking tools.

Failure Summary Dashboard

Symptoms
  • Loud 'marbles in a can' rattle on cold start
  • Restricted performance mode
  • P0016 / P0017 Cam Correlation Codes
Root Cause

Soft metal on the back of the timing chain guides allows the steel tensioner pin to wear a hole, losing chain tension.

Est. Repair Cost

USD 4,500 - 7,500

Values vary by region and labor rates.
